Licensing My Music
|
|
|
The vast majority of my music is available
to license for use in your productions.
This page details the licenses needed to use my pre-written
music in your audio-visual production.
Prices for custom-composed soundtracks and music for
your film or production will vary depending on various
factors which I'm happy to discuss. Please contact
for more info.

one of the following licences. You can now obtain an

if you don't see the license you require, or if youre
unsure which license you need for your project, please

Royalty-free
music
|
|
In addition, some of my music
is available for Royalty-Free purchase (and will
be clearly marked as).
Purchase of my music labelled as royalty-free
automatically grants the customer a sync license
to use the music in the following types of visual
production without any further fee (if the film
is to be sold for physical retail, e.g. on DVD,
it covers use in up to 1,000 copies):
|
|
Audio-visual broadcast productions
(e.g. TV, documentary or film)
Film festivals or promotion
DVD/video productions
Radio broadcasts
Website background music
Radio and TV advertising
Background music for podcasts
Once you've paid for the download of my royalty-free
music, you can use the music immediately in your
film or documentary productions. As the customer,
you can use the music in as many of your projects
as you wish without paying further fees. So if
youve made 5 short films, one purchase of
the royalty-free music grants you a license to
use that music in any or all of your films without
further payment. However, the license is non-transferable
so the music may only be used by the customer
or the company for which it was purchased.
If your film is to be sold in physical form (e.g.
video/DVD), the included license covers use in
up to 1,000 physical copies per project. If you
will be selling in excess of 1,000 units, you
will need an extended retail license:
1,001 - 10,000 units: £200
10,001 - 50,000 units: £250
Over 50,000 units: £500
Royalty-free music may not be duplicated or re-sold
on CD or other format either in its original or
modified form (so for example, it can't be purchased
and then re-sold to other filmmakers as production
music). It may not be included on its own in audio-only
format (e.g. it can't be sold or included on music
compilation CDs) and is only for use in audio-visual
productions (or to be used behind spoken word
podcasts or audiobooks etc.)
Although 'Royalty-Free' means that you (as the
filmmaker) don't have to pay any further license
fees to use the music, it doesn't mean that broadcast
(or 'performance') royalties for the composer
are being forfeited. Broadcasters (such as TV
channels) pay a fixed blanket fee to the various
music collection agencies (e.g. PRS, GEMA, ASCAP
etc.) who in turn ensure that these broadcast
royalties are channeled correctly to the original
composer.
So if your film or documentary does get picked
up for broadcast, you will still need to fill
in an appropriate 'cue sheet' with my details
and membership number for the broadcaster whether
the music is Royalty-Free or not. But this requires
no additional payment from you and is just a matter
of ensuring the paperwork is correct. If you know
your film is going to be broadcast, please contact
me to ensure you have the correct details for
any cue sheet submissions
The copyright for the recordings and composition
remain the property of the composer at all times
but you are free to use them with your audio-visual
productions in perpetuity.

Buying
mp3s for personal use
For listeners who wish to buy and download my
music just for personal listening (e.g. on an
iPod, computer or other mp3 player) and not
for use in any visual, radio or other
media production, obviously no license is necessary
(just as if you bought a CD from a physical shop)
and the price is as stated in the shop.
Note: none of my mp3s for sale use any kind of
restrictive Digital Rights Management meaning
they will play on any mp3 device. This is because
I believe you should be able to play my music
on the equipment of your choice. However, please
do not share or distribute my music to third parties
or make available on blogs etc. without my permission.
