License my music - Simon Wilkinson - TheBlueMask

Licensing My Music

The vast majority of my music is available to license for use in your productions.

This page details the licenses needed to use my pre-written music in your audio-visual production.

Prices for custom-composed soundtracks and music for your film or production will vary depending on various factors which I'm happy to discuss. Please contact for more info.

If you wish to use any of my music in an audio-visual production, you will need to purchase one of the following licences. You can now obtain an instant license for most tracks in the shop; if you don't see the license you require, or if you’re unsure which license you need for your project, please contact me.

a) Non-commercial home/student productions

This covers the use of the music in non-commercial (ie not for sale), non-broadcast audio-visual productions for distribution to friends and family, educational establishments (schools and colleges), film festivals, trailers, church productions, personal websites, podcasts and user-generated content aggregators (eg Myspace/Youtube/Facebook etc).

Specifically, this license covers the following non-commercial productions:

  • Personal non-commercial home video
  • Personal non-commercial wedding video
  • Student film (for performance in schools/colleges etc.)
  • Non-commercial independent or short film
  • Non-commercial documentary
  • Non-commercial film trailer
  • Film festival submissions
  • Theatrical production with non-paying audience
  • Personal/not-for-profit website
  • Personal/not-for-profit podcast
  • Church productions
  • User-generated video site (eg Myspace/Youtube/Facebook)

This license does not cover any productions which are made available for commercial sale or for television/cinema/radio broadcast use.

The license price for non-commercial home/student productions is:

per track:

£9.99

If you'd like to discuss bulk pricing for non-commercial licensing of multiple tracks please get in touch for more info.

This license covers the music use in one production only (including all related promo & trailers), so a separate license would be needed for each new production/film that uses it.

b) Commercial non-broadcast productions

This license covers the use of music in commercial (i.e. for sale) non-broadcast films, productions and websites in up to 1,000 physical copies (DVDs, videos, flash drives etc).

Specifically, this license covers all non-commercial productions listed in section a) above as well as the following commercial productions:

  • Commercial films/shorts/documentaries (up to 1,000 copies)
  • Corporate/business presentations (up to 1,000 copies)
  • Trade shows/live presentations
  • Commercial websites (background music)
  • Telephone on-hold music
  • Commercial (for sale) podcasts (background music)

This license does not cover any productions which are intended for broadcast use on television/cinema/radio.

The license price for commercial non-broadcast productions is:

per track:

£49.99

If you'd like to discuss bulk pricing for commercial licensing of multiple tracks or an extended retail license for commercial use in over 1,000 copies please get in touch for more info.

This license covers the music use in one production only (including all related promo & trailers), so a separate license would be needed for each new production/film that uses it.

Royalty-free music

Royalty free music composer

In addition, some of my music is available for Royalty-Free purchase (and will be clearly marked as).

Purchase of my music labelled as “royalty-free” automatically grants the customer a sync license to use the music in the following types of visual production without any further fee (if the film is to be sold for physical retail, e.g. on DVD, it covers use in up to 1,000 copies):

Audio-visual broadcast productions (e.g. TV, documentary or film)
Film festivals or promotion
DVD/video productions
Radio broadcasts
Website background music
Radio and TV advertising
Background music for podcasts

Once you've paid for the download of my royalty-free music, you can use the music immediately in your film or documentary productions. As the customer, you can use the music in as many of your projects as you wish without paying further fees. So if you’ve made 5 short films, one purchase of the royalty-free music grants you a license to use that music in any or all of your films without further payment. However, the license is non-transferable so the music may only be used by the customer or the company for which it was purchased.

If your film is to be sold in physical form (e.g. video/DVD), the included license covers use in up to 1,000 physical copies per project. If you will be selling in excess of 1,000 units, you will need an extended retail license:

1,001 - 10,000 units: £200
10,001 - 50,000 units: £250
Over 50,000 units: £500

Royalty-free music may not be duplicated or re-sold on CD or other format either in its original or modified form (so for example, it can't be purchased and then re-sold to other filmmakers as production music). It may not be included on its own in audio-only format (e.g. it can't be sold or included on music compilation CDs) and is only for use in audio-visual productions (or to be used behind spoken word podcasts or audiobooks etc.)

Although 'Royalty-Free' means that you (as the filmmaker) don't have to pay any further license fees to use the music, it doesn't mean that broadcast (or 'performance') royalties for the composer are being forfeited. Broadcasters (such as TV channels) pay a fixed blanket fee to the various music collection agencies (e.g. PRS, GEMA, ASCAP etc.) who in turn ensure that these broadcast royalties are channeled correctly to the original composer.

So if your film or documentary does get picked up for broadcast, you will still need to fill in an appropriate 'cue sheet' with my details and membership number for the broadcaster whether the music is Royalty-Free or not. But this requires no additional payment from you and is just a matter of ensuring the paperwork is correct. If you know your film is going to be broadcast, please contact me to ensure you have the correct details for any cue sheet submissions

The copyright for the recordings and composition remain the property of the composer at all times but you are free to use them with your audio-visual productions in perpetuity.

Buying mp3s for personal use

For listeners who wish to buy and download my music just for personal listening (e.g. on an iPod, computer or other mp3 player) and not for use in any visual, radio or other media production, obviously no license is necessary (just as if you bought a CD from a physical shop) and the price is as stated in the shop.

Note: none of my mp3s for sale use any kind of restrictive Digital Rights Management meaning they will play on any mp3 device. This is because I believe you should be able to play my music on the equipment of your choice. However, please do not share or distribute my music to third parties or make available on blogs etc. without my permission.

Payment for licenses can be accepted securely through Paypal in all currencies in the shop.

Licenses can now be purchased immediately from the shop. If you don't see the license you need, or you’re unsure about which license you do need, please contact me.
